I discovered Graveworm, if I recall right, around 15 years old. Stefano's brutal manner of singing mixed with that majestic orchestration which was a quite, if not the most important part of their music, seemed to me back then fucking infernal. I've listened to them for a period of time and I still do it with pleasure except the 2005, 2007, and 2009 album releases. This are some of the poopiest songs I 've ever listened to, questioning in my mind 'What the fuck are this guys doing?' I was very disappointed by these albums, but back to 'Fragments of Death'. This is for sure a turning back to the roots that made them quite popular.
The album starts with 'Insomnia', a fast and aggressive song with Stefano's voice shattering the air from the first second. It's a little black metal-oriented with a fast drumming style (one of the best drummers in the whole world). Too bad the lyrics are again shitty and socially-related as on the previous shitty albums. It follows 'Only Death in Our Wake', which can be included without any problem on the Nutopia album. Too simple without bringing anything new, just the same fucking patterns as before, but the grief and disappointment is erased quickly because one of the best songs of the album follows. It's called 'Absence of Faith' with doomy influences.
Stefano keeps the song alive with his amazing growls and the keys that sound in the background bring a touch of mystery and grief to this almost-masterpiece. There are moments without that aggression, a quick respite for the eventual diehard headbangers. 'Living Nightmare' is the next song, a kinda boring one with nothing progressive regarding style, the same fucking metalcore-styled riffs with the same stupid atmosphere in which I found nothing interesting. 'The World Will Die in Flames' is a cold, psycho song, and you can imagine the whole fucking world falling on its knees, trying to escape from the fire. It has that somehow slow, heavy, pounding atmosphere. This song successfully could be a Draconian song in its keyed parts, but it's definitely a black metal song. And here we are to the sixth song, my personal favorite, 'Anxiety', a cruel breakdown and a turning point on the album.
Morcheeba - Fragments Of Freedom
The feminine voice kinda brings originality to this masterpiece and it seems like Fiori is fucking vomiting his soul with those fucked-up screams. I tried covering this song - I ended up spitting blood, lol. Mixvibes pro 5.2 serial.
One of the best songs on the album, but not THE ONE. 'See No Future' is a piece of crap and I don't want to talk about it. 'The Prophecy' is an instrumental song, a piece of crap as well as it brings nothing new. 'Old Forgotten Song ' is quite a good song with dark atmosphere and is full of grievance that is torn apart very quickly by some very rhythmic parts. AND HERE WE ARE, TO THE BEST SONG OF THE ENTIRE ALBUM.
STRAIGHT FROM GOD'S IPOD, I BRING YOU.' WHERE ANGELS DO NOT FLY!!!' This song made my brain explode.
It's very fast and well-constructed. The breakdown at 1:40 kicks fucking ass. It explodes into your face, moving in on the spine. It's the best song on the album and I can't be the only one who thinks this way.
The last song is a remake of one of their most popular ballads 'Awake', but reinforced and brutalized. The ending part with that prayer in Latin and then the shotgun blast is one of their best ideas. All being said, points for this endeavor to the guys for returning to their roots, the true and only one.
Long life Graveworm! I don't know why, but I'd had my eye on Graveworm since their first flirtations with Nuclear Blast and the melodic black metal underworld.
Not that what they'd done up to that point had been anything to kill one's significant other over (though I'd say 'Engraved in Black' is probably their creative pinnacle); maybe it's the hooky, pop star-like appeal the 'Worms possess(ed), that sense of accessability nestled within a Filthy Cradle. Whatever the case, no matter how derivative they'd been in the past, and no matter how derivative they continue to be, something kept my interest aflame at least a little bit, even after two missteps, both the minimal ('Diabolical Figures') and the horrendous ('Collateral Defect') And since we're on the back end of an age of stylistic redemption, I figure it was due time for Mr. Fiori and his band of gothic warriors to give the listening public another reason for us to maintain our always-at-the-risk-of-fleeting attention From the sounds of it, it seems like Graveworm is only so ready to leap back into their musical roots and instead travels the already worn down path of black metal acts moving into slightly uninspired death metal entities, already shown with the previously mentioned problematic albums. That being said, the treading of such a path isn't wrought with as many problems as before. The catchiness is still present, though buried under swaths of attempted brutality that are only so naturally-sounding, and the general songwriting appeal is taught with fancy melodies and a sense of urgency throughout. Not so much jittery exuberance; rather the group seems so excited over the current goings-on that they want you to leap headfirst into their attempts to re-conjure the old Gothenburg spirit now dormant and trying to wipe its screamo eyeliner off. With that alone, I can give this group (and album, in particular) necessary props Keeping the music guitar-centric is key to success with this kind of sound, that's for sure, but good songwriting and performance is just as important, if not more so, and keeping things original should be a part of that equation, no matter how nigh impossible it is to achieve.
That last aspect the biggest problem Graveworm faces with this new work; I don't recall a time in their existence when their overall output has been WHOLLY original, and this time around we find them treading the bloodied waters of Amon Amarth-like melodic brutality with a bit of a Hypocritical modern twinge, jumping from the dramatic to the overzealous track by track. Thankfully, that guitar-centric feel doesn’t sound as unnecessary as when done so by other one-time sympho-black acts, what with the rampant harmonic leads and chunky, bottom-heavy riffs lifting the symphonic underscores and galloping percussive rhythms into odes of heaviness and despairing ambience, with slightly weak-kneed death growls floating over everything, the very sounds of them earnest but not really all that well performed. It's all cohesive, as the likes of 'Only Death in Our Wake', 'The World Will Die in Flames', and 'See No Future' can attest to, but there's still something missing. So in the end, Graveworm looks to be getting back on track a little with this whole foray into death metal thing, or maybe we're all getting more used to it than we originally though. Either way, the new disc is decent enough to give a spin every once in a while, but for my money, I'd more than likely end up dealing with their mid-era works more than anything.
